Fatal, Fiery Crash on Hazel Ave near American River Bridge in Sacramento County

Sacramento County, CA – On the evening of Monday, September 14, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in a man losing his life after a truck overturned and caught fire, according to FOX40, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place just after 10:30 PM on southbound Hazel Avenue near the American River bridge, a heavily traveled crossing connecting Fair Oaks and Rancho Cordova.

Authorities said the man was traveling at approximately 90 miles per hour prior to the collision when his white pickup truck overturned and became fully engulfed in flames, blocking all lanes. Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District responded, with units traveling the wrong way down Hazel Avenue to reach the scene and stop traffic. Officers attempted to rescue the man, who was trapped inside, but were unsuccessful before the vehicle was fully engulfed. Two officers sustained minor burn injuries during the rescue attempt and were later released after treatment. The man died as a result of the crash.

An evidence tow was requested for the vehicle, which was relocated to the intersection of Hazel Avenue and Curragh Downs Way facing eastbound before being towed to an evidence yard. Southbound lanes of Hazel Avenue were closed during the response, reopening at approximately 2:34 AM.

Witness statements indicate speed is suspected to be a factor in the crash. It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors.

Sacramento County Car Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims

California law requires all drivers to operate their vehicles at speeds appropriate to roadway conditions, and excessive speed that leads to a loss of control resulting in death may support a finding of negligence against the driver's estate. Investigators with California law enforcement examine physical evidence such as skid marks, vehicle damage, and witness accounts to determine the vehicle's speed and the cause of the rollover.

Because officers themselves were injured attempting to rescue the man from the burning vehicle, their firsthand accounts of the fire's rapid progression could offer valuable insight into the vehicle's condition and how quickly the situation escalated after impact. The family of the man who lost his life may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, which can provide compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
