Sacramento, CA – On the morning of Friday, April 17, 2026, a collision resulted in a pedestrian losing her life on westbound Florin Road, according to ABC10, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 6:08 AM on westbound Florin Road east of French Road.
Authorities said a male driver was traveling westbound on Florin Road when he observed a woman in the roadway. Evidence suggests that he attempted to brake but was unable to stop in time. Officers arrived at approximately 6:15 AM and located the female pedestrian in the westbound lanes, where she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash.
All lanes of Florin Road were blocked during the investigation before being fully reopened at approximately 7:09 AM. The identity of the deceased was to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office following notification of next of kin. The investigation remains ongoing.
Partial Liability in Pedestrian Accidents
California Law does not consider pedestrians to have the right-of-way under all circumstances, such as when they attempt to cross outside of a crosswalk. However, motorists are never relieved of the expectation to provide pedestrians with a duty of care toward their safety.
It may therefore be determined that a motorist is subject to partial liability in a pedestrian accident. Should that be the case, they would be financially responsible for the victim’s recovery costs in proportion to their degree of liability.
