Two motorcyclists were involved in a deadly head-on crash with a pickup truck Wednesday morning in Bakersfield. Bakersfield Police Officers say the tragic crash occurred in northwest Bakersfield along Rosedale Highway near the Lowe’s Home Improvement Shopping Center.

KERO-TV reported on the accident on April 26, 2023, and said it occurred at around 10:35 a.m. near the intersection of Jet Way.

Investigators arrived on the scene and found that two motorcyclists had been riding in tandem westbound on Rosedale Highway when they attempted a left turn onto Jet Way at the traffic light. Both motorcycles were struck head-on by the driver of a brown Nissan Frontier pickup truck traveling eastbound on the highway.

An adult male on one motorcycle was killed in the impact. Another adult male on the other motorcycle suffered what were thought to be major injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital. The driver of the pickup was not hurt.

The truck’s driver stayed at the scene to cooperate with investigators. The Bakersfield Police Department reports that they talked to several people who witnessed the accident. They have not released the cause of the collision and continue to investigate.

Motorcycle Accident Dangers in Bakersfield

Motorcyclists should be able to enjoy the open air on each trip without having to worry about what the careless driver beside them is doing. Unfortunately, the threat is very real as riders travel Bakersfield. Distracted drivers can be looking at a cell phone or lost in thought and miss seeing the smaller profile of a rider.

This inattention leads to reckless drivers turning in front of the motorcycle they didn’t notice, or ramming the back of a motorcycle they didn’t see stopping in front of them. These mistakes and others send local motorcyclists to Bakersfield emergency rooms each year.

In 2022, Bakersfield recorded 65 motorcycle accidents involving injury. At least one of those crashes resulted in a tragic fatality. Those figures are down from 2021 figures when 82 serious motorcycle accidents were reported and eight tragic fatalities were documented.

These statistics illustrate the critical harm motorcyclists are exposed to each year on our local streets and highways. Increased awareness from the drivers who commonly proceed carelessly can do the most to prevent these heartbreaking motorcycle accidents in Bakersfield each year.
