Stanislaus County, CA - On the afternoon of Wednesday, June 10, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in fatal injuries for a female motorist, according to FOX40.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 1:43 PM near the Delta-Mendota Canal at Howard Road in Westley.
Emergency dispatchers directed law enforcement officers to the rural area of Stanislaus County after receiving notification that an automobile had entered the local waterway. Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered the vehicle completely submerged underneath the surface of the water, prompting authorities to request the specialized assistance of the Stanislaus County Sheriff Department dive team to execute a recovery operation.
Once emergency crews successfully extracted the vehicle from the canal, which investigators identified as a silver 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee, they discovered a female occupant positioned inside the driver's seat. Medical personnel at the location evaluated the woman and officially pronounced her dead at the scene due to the nature of the incident.
An initial review of the scene by traffic investigators determined that the woman was traveling westbound along Howard Road and approaching the Delta-Mendota Canal at an unconfirmed rate of speed. Police said that the motorist then executed a right turn, departed from the designated roadway surface, traveled through a perimeter fence, and subsequently plunged directly into the canal.
The Stanislaus County Coroner's Office is handling the official identification process for the deceased motorist pending the notification of her family members. The accident is still under investigation.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
