Fatal Crash near Hazel Ave, Nimbus Rd in Rancho Cordova

Rancho Cordova, CA – In the early hours of Tuesday, September 8, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality after a car struck a light pole and caught fire, according to FOX40, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 1:15 AM at Hazel Avenue and Nimbus Road.

Authorities said a gray Toyota Camry was traveling southbound on Hazel Avenue when it struck a light pole, overturned, and caught fire. Toyota's telematics service attempted to make contact with the vehicle's occupant but was unable to reach them, with only background noise possibly consistent with the fire audible on the line.

Fire personnel confirmed one fatality inside the vehicle. County Roads was contacted for traffic control, and the intersection of Hazel Avenue and Nimbus Road was completely blocked during the response.

The coroner was notified, and an evidence tow was requested for the vehicle. The crash also damaged the traffic signal at the intersection, prompting County Roads to respond for repairs. The intersection was set to flashing red signals while repair work continued.

This is an ongoing investigation.

Rancho Cordova Car Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims

California law follows the principle of comparative negligence. This means that even if a driver is found partially at fault for an accident, their surviving family members may still pursue compensation if the negligence of another party, such as a road hazard or defective vehicle equipment, contributed to the crash. Investigators with California law enforcement examine factors such as speed, roadway conditions, and vehicle condition to determine what role outside factors may have played.

Because the vehicle's manufacturer attempted to make contact through its telematics system before the fatality was confirmed, any data retained by that system could offer investigators additional insight into the vehicle's condition and speed leading up to the crash. The family of the deceased may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, which can provide compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
