Milpitas, CA – On the early morning of Friday, March 14, 2025, a multi-vehicle collision resulted in the death of 41-year-old San Jose resident and injuries to multiple others, according to CHP Fatal with additional reporting from NBC Bay Area.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 3:54 AM on southbound Interstate 880 near the Tasman Drive off-ramp.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a white Toyota Prius and an unidentified SUV were involved in a collision that left debris scattered across the roadway. As vehicles attempted to maneuver through the crash scene, a blue Honda Accord struck a tire in the road and pulled over to the right-hand shoulder, while a white Toyota Highlander ran over debris in the center divide.

Emergency responders were called to the scene as additional vehicles continued to be affected by the hazardous conditions. Shortly after 4:00 AM, a black Chrysler crashed into the previously involved vehicles in lane number one. At 4:03 AM, reports confirmed that a yellow 14-foot box truck was also involved, with its occupant unable to exit the vehicle.

CHP dispatch logs indicate that one driver, whose vehicle was blocking traffic, complained of chest pain, and multiple individuals were either injured or trapped inside their vehicles as all lanes of I-880 became blocked due to the crash. Emergency personnel worked to free those inside, while medical responders provided aid to the injured.

By 4:50 AM, the coroner was notified of a confirmed fatality at the scene. The deceased, a 41-year-old woman from San Jose, had been driving one of the involved vehicles. Officials have not yet released her name pending notification of her next of kin.

Reports indicate that the registered owner of the Chrysler became confrontational with authorities and a tow truck driver during the removal process. By 6:54 AM, all lanes had reopened, and the accident scene was cleared.

The CHP continues to investigate the cause of the collision and whether any factors such as speed, impairment, or weather conditions contributed to the incident.

Comparative Liability

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Liability rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should evidence reveal that another party contributed to the injuries, victims may be eligible to file a personal injury claim with the responsible party’s insurance.
