A stop sign violation led to a devastating accident in Tulare County, north of Porterville, over the weekend. The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene at Avenue 196 and Road 256 on Saturday Evening July 15, 2023.

According to KFSN-TV, the California Highway Patrol investigators determined that a 28-year-old man from Corcoran was at the wheel of a vehicle that didn’t stop at a two-way stop sign intersection on Road 256. The vehicle entered Avenue 196 and struck a truck pulling a trailer.

A 38-year-old passenger from Corcoran in the first vehicle died at the scene. The 28-year-old driver was first rushed to a hospital and then later died there. Two people in the truck were injured. The driver from Porterville suffered what were thought to be minor injuries. A passenger in the truck suffered major injuries and was transported to the hospital. Traffic Hazards at Intersections in Tulare County

Intersections in rural parts of Tulare County are places where drivers must trust that other motorists are paying attention and intend to follow traffic laws. An overlooked stop sign or a vehicle traveling too fast to fully stop at an intersection can put many other drivers and passengers in extreme danger.

Accident statistics from 2022 show that there were 1,925 traffic accidents involving injuries in Tulare County. Those collisions led to at least 84 tragic deaths. 708 of those accidents occurred at a Tulare County intersection and 192 incidents involved someone ignoring a traffic signal or sign.

Obeying stop signs and traffic lights is one of the first things new drivers learn, but unfortunately, even experienced drivers can get careless. They can allow themselves to become unfocused and force a dangerous accident. Victims involved can suffer broken bones, and neck and back injuries. In the most severe cases, victims can be at risk of losing their lives over a mistake by another driver.
