A devastating accident involving a hit-and-run driver and a pedestrian took one life on Monday evening in Madera. Around 4:30 p.m. on the afternoon of September 4, 2023, police confirmed that the pedestrian lost their life in an accident on Avenue 15, just east of Tozer Street.

According to Your Central Valley reports, a driver was traveling in the area when they struck a pedestrian due to reasons that are not entirely known. When police officials arrived at the scene, they discovered that the driver of the unknown vehicle fled without stopping.

EMS crews rushed the pedestrian to the hospital, who has since been identified as a 66-year-old man. He was tragically pronounced dead while there due to traumatic injuries.

Avenue 15 was blocked in the area of the accident for some time following the crash, which led to traffic delays in the area.

No further details have been released but California Highway Patrol continues its investigation into the accident at this time.

Maison Law of Madera posted details regarding this fatal pedestrian accident, as well as information on how families can secure the assistance they need after a fatal accident.

Dangers of Madera Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians have virtually no protection from harm on major roads in Madera, which means that they are prone to some of the most extensive harm when an accident happens. This is especially true in hit-and-run accidents where the driver flees the scene without helping the pedestrian to receive immediate and necessary medical attention.

Statistics from California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) shows that a total of 16 pedestrian accidents happened in the entirety of Madera in 2022. This was slightly fewer than the 26 pedestrian accidents that happened in the city in 2021, though pedestrian accidents leading to both injuries and fatalities remain a real problem.

Though drivers are supposed to stay alert on our roads at all times, this does not always happen as drivers engage in driving distractions, speeding, and more. In the blink of an eye, a life could be taken due to a pedestrian accident. When a hit-and-run driver is involved, it can be incredibly difficult to prove fault, leaving families in a difficult position.
