Fatal Big Rig Crash on I-5 near CR-95 in Yolo County

Yolo County, CA – On the morning of Thursday, August 27, 2026, a single-vehicle collision involving an overturned big rig resulted in at least one fatality, according to KCRA, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place shortly after 6:05 AM on southbound Interstate 5, just south of County Road 95 between the Zamora and Dufour areas.

Authorities said a big rig crashed and overturned, coming to rest across the roadway and blocking all lanes. An iPhone crash notification alerted emergency dispatchers to the incident. Emergency medical responders and a medical helicopter dispatched to the scene, where the solo occupant of the vehicle sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. The crash also caused a diesel fuel spill that fire crews contained at the scene.

A SigAlert was issued due to extended lane closures while crews worked to upright the big rig and clear the wreckage. Emergency responders and towing personnel secured the area, eventually allowing traffic to pass using the right-hand shoulder.

CHP has not released whether speed, mechanical failure, or alcohol were factors in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.

Yolo County Single-Vehicle Accidents and Personal Injury Claims

While solo commercial vehicle crashes are often initially assumed to stem from driver error, outside factors such as defective auto parts, sudden tire blowouts or mechanical failure, hazardous road debris, or improper cargo loading can directly contribute to a collision. When third-party negligence or equipment defects play a role, surviving family members may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim against responsible manufacturers, maintenance contractors, or entity owners.

A wrongful death claim can provide the family with compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
