Santa Cruz County, CA – On the afternoon of Friday, June 19, 2026, a single-vehicle motorcycle collision resulted in the death of a 28-year-old man from New Jersey, according to KSBW, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 2:00 PM on Empire Grade south of Alba Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Authorities said the man was riding a black 2023 BMW S1000RR motorcycle southbound on Empire Grade when, for reasons still under investigation, he appeared to have lost control of the vehicle. The rider and motorcycle crashed onto the roadway before continuing off the road to the southeast.
The rider struck a telephone pole while the motorcycle came to rest down an embankment east of the southbound lanes. An off-duty nurse who was at the scene began providing aid, with CPR initiated and an air medical unit requested. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
An evidence tow was requested for the motorcycle, which was transported to a tow yard following the conclusion of on-scene proceedings.
Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors in the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
