Fresno, CA – A 74-year-old man driving a white Mazda pickup truck died Thursday afternoon, January 16, 2025, in a collision with a big rig according to KSEE.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident took place around 1:25 PM at the intersection of South and Cedar Avenues.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the pickup driver ran a stop sign, colliding with the right front of a commercial Kenworth truck traveling northbound on Cedar Avenue at approximately 50 miles per hour.
After the collision, the pickup truck veered into a nearby vineyard, while the big rig continued into a front yard, damaging a fence and striking a parked car.
The driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at the scene. The 61-year-old big rig driver was transported to Community Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries.
The investigation into factors related to the cause of the crash is ongoing.
Stop Sign Laws
California Law requires drivers to come to a complete stop at a Stop sign (California Vehicle Code 22450). Drivers may only enter the intersection when it appears safe for all parties to do so (California Vehicle Code 21802).
Wrongful Death Claims
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Liability rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. A personal injury attorney can play a crucial role in helping victims establish legal responsibility after a traffic accident.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
