Rohnert Park, CA — A child was hospitalized after being struck while riding a motorized scooter on Thursday, December 4, 2024, according to KRON.
Rohnert Park Police & Fire reported that the accident occurred near the intersection of Southwest Boulevard and Seed Farm Drive when the child was on the way home from school.
According to investigators, the driver had the right of way with a green light and struck the scooter as it entered the roadway. The child was wearing a helmet, which is believed to have prevented more serious injuries.
Authorities have not indicated whether any citations were issued but confirmed the child’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Local authorities are using this opportunity to advocate for increased caution around schools and residential areas to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter riders.
Partial Liability in Bicycle and Scooter Accidents
California Law does not consider bicyclists or scooter riders to have the right-of-way under all circumstances. However, motorists are never relieved of the expectation to provide bicyclists with a Duty of Care toward their safety.
It may therefore be determined that a motorist is held only partially liable in a bicycle accident. Should that be the case, they would be financially responsible for the victim’s recovery costs in proportion to their degree of liability.
