Bakersfield, CA – On the night of Saturday, March 29, 2025, a hit-and-run collision resulted in the death of a pedestrian, according to KBAK.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 10:45 PM at the intersection of South Union Avenue and White Lane.
Officers responded to reports of a pedestrian in the roadway when an unknown vehicle struck the individual in the number two lane. Emergency responders pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.
Authorities did not locate any vehicle debris or identifying markings at the scene. The driver involved fled, and it is unclear whether they have been identified or taken into custody.
Southbound lanes of South Union Avenue were closed following the crash as officers investigated and secured the area. Additional units were called to assist with traffic control. The fire department was later contacted regarding a washdown of the pavement but was unable to respond.
The roadway was reopened after the investigation concluded. Authorities have not released further details about the victim or potential suspect.
California Hit-and-Run Laws
California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage.
