A motorcyclist died in a tragic accident Wednesday night in Tulare County. The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene sometime after 10 p.m. north of Visalia on August 2, 2023.

KFSN-TV reports the accident occurred along Avenue 328 where a pickup truck and the motorcycle were traveling in opposite directions. Investigators say the driver of a pickup truck attempted to make a turn onto Road 112 but ended up turning in front of the oncoming rider. The motorcycle struck the side of the pickup truck.

The 55-year-old man riding the motorcycle was taken away in an ambulance but he couldn’t be saved. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the tragic accident.

Tulare County Accident Hazards

Motorcyclists in and around Visalia are constantly put at risk when drivers lose focus on the road and don’t pay attention to where other vehicles are traveling. This problem is often seen at intersections when drivers looking to make a turn don’t look at oncoming traffic long enough to spot the smaller profile of a rider.

They can turn in front of a motorcycle they didn’t see or a motorcycle they didn’t bother to make sure was far enough away.

These mistakes lead to devastating collisions for defenseless riders all year long. California traffic researchers document the sad results of these collisions. In 2022, they tracked at least 122 motorcycle accidents involving injury across Tulare County. That number was almost identical to the total number of serious motorcycle accidents in Tulare County in 2021 when at least 123 people were hurt. At least 26 riders were tragically killed over that two-year span.

Tulare County drivers can think that a simple glance in either direction will be enough to prevent motorcycle accidents, but with each new motorcycle collision, they are proven wrong. Drivers need to be focused on every other motorist on the road at all times, whether on rural roads or in the city. It’s the only way more motorcyclists will be kept safe and allowed to return home at the end of their rides.
