Freedom, CA – On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 9, 2025, a single-vehicle crash involving an electric bicycle resulted in the death of 78-year-old Soquel resident, according to KSBW.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the incident occurred around 1:32 PM on Manfre Road, east of Larkin Valley Road in Santa Cruz County.
The man had been riding a silver Specialized Level Three electric bicycle eastbound on Manfre Road at an undetermined speed. For reasons that remain under investigation, the rider veered off the roadway and struck a dirt embankment. Emergency responders arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released the man’s name, pending notification of his family. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash. It is currently unknown whether alcohol, drugs, or a medical emergency contributed to the incident. No other vehicles were involved.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
