San Joaquin County, CA – On the evening of Sunday, February 1, 2026, a single-vehicle crash resulted in the death of the driver, according to KFSN.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 10:28 PM on Lower Jones Road near Empire Cut, in unincorporated San Joaquin County near Stockton.
Authorities said a Toyota passenger vehicle was traveling eastbound when the driver failed to navigate a sharp right-hand curve for reasons still under investigation.
The vehicle reportedly crossed into the westbound lane, went down a rock-covered embankment, and entered the water of Empire Cut. Emergency crews responded quickly, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle became submerged.
CHP officials said the cause of the crash is still under investigation, and it has not yet been determined whether alcohol or drugs were involved.
Drivers in the area are being reminded to exercise caution, particularly around sharp curves and embankments, as investigations continue.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
