Fresno, CA – A bicyclist in his 60s was hospitalized with major injuries after being struck by a car in Northeast Fresno on Monday evening, September 30, 2024, according to ABC30.

The accident took place just after 7 PM at the intersection of Shaw Avenue and Sixth Street.

According to Fresno Police, the man rode his bicycle into the path of oncoming traffic, where he was hit by a vehicle. Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported him to the hospital for treatment of his severe injuries.

The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.

This intersection is located near shopping centers and residential areas, which promote significant pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Police have not yet determined if any additional factors contributed to the collision.

Comparative Negligence

California Law upholds the concept of Comparative Negligence, which allows more than one party to share blame in a personal injury accident. Injured victims may have their compensation reduced if they are found partially to blame.

Duty of Care Toward Bicyclists

Drivers have a specific “Duty of Care” towards bicyclists, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those injured in a bicycle accident, filing a Personal Injury claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills and other related damages.

If the at-fault driver avoids legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
