Belmont, Van Ness Ave Hit-and-Run Kills Fresno Pedestrian

Fresno, CA – On the afternoon of Monday, January 5, 2026, a pedestrian was injured after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run collision at the intersection of Belmont and Van Ness avenues, according to KSEE.

The Fresno Police Department reports that officers responded to the scene around 4:15 PM, just south of the Tower District, after receiving reports of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male pedestrian who had been struck by a car.

Authorities stated that the man was conscious and able to speak with officers at the scene. He was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment, where he was listed in stable condition.

Following a review of surveillance footage from the area, investigators determined that the pedestrian was crossing the roadway illegally at the time of the collision. However, police said the driver also bears responsibility for the incident.

According to officers, the driver fled the scene after the collision without stopping to provide aid or identifying information, prompting a hit-and-run investigation. The suspect vehicle was described as a black sedan that was traveling northbound on Van Ness Avenue.

The Fresno Police Department continues to investigate the incident and is seeking assistance from the public. Anyone with information related to the crash or the identity of the driver is encouraged to contact Fresno police.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver evade authorities, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
