Madera County, CA – In the early hours of Friday, May 1, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the death of a 72-year-old Clovis man in the Bass Lake area, according to KSEE/KGPE, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 3:44 AM on Road 274 at Fawn Point Lane.
Authorities said the man was driving a 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 northbound on Road 274 when he was unable to navigate a sharp curve in the roadway. The vehicle departed the roadway, overturned, and struck a tree and rocks before coming to rest on its roof approximately 30 feet down an embankment.
The driver was pinned inside the vehicle following the impact. CAL FIRE and emergency medical services responded to the scene and worked to extricate the driver, performing life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
The coroner was notified and responded to the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
